Clinical evaluation of Acupuncture on frozen shoulder by DITI

Abstract
Object :
This study is designed to evaluate the correlation between the data of DITI(Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging) examination and the changes of clinical symptoms after the therapy of acupuncture in the patients with frozen shoulder.
Contents :
The conservative therapy with acupuncture was performed during 4-5weeks.
The acupuncture points of LI4, LI11, LI15, LI6, SI3, SI6, SI9, SI10, SI11, SI12, SI14, TE3, TES, TE14 was used.
In the pre- and post therapy, DITI examinations were performed in patients who had frozen shoulder and were treated by acupuncture simultaneously, and then tried to correlate the results of clinical symptoms with the difference of thermographic findings at pre-and post acupuncture.
Setting .
The standard routine thermographic examinations were performed with thermography (DITI) in the 23 padients with frozen shoulder at pre- and post acupuncture.
Patients :
Thermographic imaging of 23 cases was analyzed. They had diagnosed frozen shoulder. They were treated by acupuncture and moxibustion therapy in Wonkwang Oriental Hospital from April, 1998 to December , 1998.
Results .
1) The causes were non-specific (43.5%), overwork (34.8%), trauma (13.0%), psycological factor(8.7%)
2) The DITI results showed 52.2% below 0.2¡É, 30.4% between 0.3 and 0.5¡É, 13.0% between 0.5 and 0.7%, 4.4% between 0.7 and 0.9%, and 090 over 0.9¡É.
3) The results of treatment using pain scale showes that 56.5% of patientsachieved excellent recovery and 26.0% achieved good recovery. After compairing the DITI results before and after treatment, we found 52.1% of patients achieved excellent recovery and 30.4% achieved good recovery.
Conclusion :
Acupuncture showed good results over 82.5% in clinical evaluation and 82.5% in DITI. Thermographic examination was valuable in the evaluation of therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment.
